The FFH area forest south of Holzkoppel is a NATURA 2000 protected area in Schleswig-Holstein in the Schleswig-Flensburg district in the fishing region in the communities Esgrus and Stangheck , about 1 km northwest of the Rundhof estate . It has an area of 22 ha and consists of more than 90% deciduous forest . Its greatest extent is in a north-westerly direction at approx. 700 m in slightly hilly terrain. There are 3 streams and 17 small bodies of water in the area. The protected area corresponds to the forest Trankjer ( Danish Trankær ), which means something like "wet Kratt of the cranes" in Danish. At the entrances or in the area there is no indication whatsoever to the visitor that he is in an FFH area.

FFH area history and nature conservation area

The NATURA 2000 standard data sheet for this FFH area forest south of Holzkoppel was created in June 2004 by the State Office for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas (LLUR) of the State of Schleswig-Holstein, and in September 2004 by the EU nature conservation authority as an area of community importance (GGB) proposed, confirmed by the EU as GGB in November 2007 and confirmed nationally as a special conservation area (BEG) in January 2010 in accordance with § 32 Paragraph 2 to 4 BNatSchG in conjunction with § 23 LNatSchG. On December 11, 2014, the management plan for the FFH area forest south of Holzkoppel was published by the Ministry for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas of Schleswig-Holstein. This is updated continuously. The FFH area is surrounded by areas that are used intensively for agriculture. Only in the northeast does it border the embankment of the disused Flensburg circular railway . It is in priority area No. 550 Forests near Rundhof of the state-wide protected area and biotope network.

FFH conservation object

The FFH subject of conservation (according to the standard data sheet as of May 2019) has been submitted to the following 2 FFH habitat types in Annex I of the EU Habitats Directive :

The degree of conservation of habitat type (LRT) 9130 is rated C (average to poor degree of conservation). The LRT 91E0 was no longer rated, as it was classified as having "no longer significant presence (D)" for the FFH area.

According to the Habitats Directive IV (according to the standard data sheet (as of May 2019)), a species with fewer than 10 specimens was counted:

FFH conservation objectives

One of the FFH conservation objects was defined as an FFH conservation objective of particular importance :

  • 9130 Woodruff beech forests

FFH analysis and assessment

The forest in the FFH area is owned by several private individuals. For all measures that go beyond the preservation of the condition existing at the time of recognition as an FFH area, there must be agreement between the lower nature conservation authority of the Schleswig-Flensburg district and the owners. The site has been used as a farming forest for centuries; H. for firewood and acorn and beechnut fattening of pigs. At some locations you can still see the shape of the Krattwald , which was typical for this use, see picture gallery. A short-term improvement in the poor assessment status of the FFH conservation objective is not to be expected.

FFH catalog of measures

A catalog of measures was drawn up in the management plan from the analysis and assessment. In addition, this was recorded in tabular form in 17 action sheets and a map. For the preservation of the current state it is important that the lower nature conservation authority upholds the self-commitment of the owners to maintain the practice of largely extensive use of the forest that has been practiced for years. The willingness of the owners to take measures that do not generate any direct costs, such as no planting new trees, no clearing of drainage ditches, no removal of dead wood, no maintenance of paths seems to be great. Cost-intensive measures, such as fencing in to prevent game browsing, which prevents natural forest renewal, or the drainage of flowing water to create natural courses, can only be implemented with direct grants from the lower nature conservation authority.

FFH success control and monitoring of the measures

Monitoring takes place in Schleswig-Holstein every 6 years. After the first mapping in 2005, a follow-up mapping was carried out for the area in 2011 on behalf of the Ministry for Energy Transition, Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas of the State of Schleswig-Holstein . The mapping was carried out by different companies. In comparison, it is noticeable that the green space in the north of the area differs from the biotope type GI (species-poor intensive grassland) to GM (mesophilic grassland fresh to moderately moist locations) and the forest type WE (wet and swamp forests of the spring areas and stream floodplains as well as locations influenced by groundwater) WM (Mesophytic Beech Forests) has changed.

As of June 2020, the measure in measures sheet no. 17 "Development of the purchased area outside the FFH area 6.4.4" has been successfully completed. The area is now an extensively used grassland area with a pond, in which a large population of pond frogs has already settled, see picture gallery. The high hunting use of the area mentioned in the follow-up monitoring still seems to exist, as remains of corn on the cob in the middle of the forest show, see picture gallery.
