The name Fiona comes from the Ossian poems of the Scottish author James Macpherson . He became popular through the pseudonym Fiona Macleod . Other first names made popular by the Ossian seals are Selma (actually the name of a castle) and Oskar .

Fiona is derived from the Gaelic fionn ("white, bright, blond").
