The Deh 4/4 II is a narrow-gauge luggage railcar of the Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn (MGB) for adhesion and cogwheel operation.

Because the Furka-Oberalp-Bahn (FO) had good experiences with the Deh 4/4 I , they procured the Deh 4/4 II as a successor. In the course of the merger of the FO with the BVZ , they came to the new Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn company, where they are only referred to as Deh 4/4 and, if necessary, differentiated by the serial numbers 21, 51 and 91.

technology

Technical drawing of the Deh 4/4 II

Since one had slight problems with the aluminum boxes of the predecessor, the Deh 4/4 II boxes were given a light steel construction with beads. In addition, the boxes were shortened to save weight. Visibility has been improved for the driver. The bogies are interchangeable with those of the Deh 4/4 I. In order to still be able to handle the car loading in the event of failure of a Ge 4/4 III tunnel locomotive , the Deh 93–94 and the Deh 95–96, which were subsequently delivered in 1984, received connections for the compressed air brake. Remote control from the control car is not possible, the composition must be covered with a stretch at each end. From 1985, the HGe 4/4 II , which can be remotely controlled from the car control vehicle, took over the reserve and additional service in the car loader.

modernization

A modernization program will start in 2015, with the original aim of creating eight four-part shuttle trains Deh – B – B Nf – ABt and five two-part reinforcement modules B – ABt. The following vehicles were used or modernized for this purpose:

  • 11 Deh 4/4 51–55 and 91–96 were subjected to a major overhaul in which the vehicles were repainted and various adjustments were made, such as the installation of new LED headlights.
  • 14 B EW II 4273–86, which were given a swivel sliding door on one side with a clear width of 1000 mm so that bicycles can be loaded.
  • 11 type B 4211–21 low-floor cars
  • 13 control cars ABt 4151–54 and 4193 (EW I) as well as 4155–59 and 4195 (EW II), with the two ABt 4193 and 4195 again having to be fitted with a driver's cab.

These shuttle trains are used together with modules in the hourly Visp – Andermatt trains, without a module for trains Andermatt – Göschenen and for some additional trains. Some of the intermediate cars are also used in shuttle trains with Deh 4/4 21–24 or HGe 4/4 "1–5.

business

SLM data sheet, 2 pages with photo, description and technical drawings

The former Deh 4/4 I and II of the FO are not differentiated in use. They are mainly used together with two intermediate cars and a control car as permanently coupled shuttle trains. Between Disentis and Andermatt (Oberalp, 110 ‰) one and between Visp and Andermatt (Goms, 90 ‰) two, in summer three reinforcement wagons can be attached. Reinforcement cars are not possible between Andermatt and Göschenen (Schöllenenschlucht, 179 ‰). The shuttle trains are connected within the composition with the automatic + GF + coupling (GFN). The couplings must be exchanged for other uses. At least one railcar, previously these were mostly no. 95 or 96, serves as a replacement vehicle for the other Deh and is also used solely for crossings. In the past, freight trains were also run to Göschenen.

Originally, the Deh shuttle trains were in use on all routes of the former FO. Since December 2014, usage has been concentrated on the Visp – Göschenen connection. Up until then there were no regular trips to Zermatt, since then a five-part shuttle train has been in one circuit between Fiesch and Zermatt (introduction of the half-hourly service in December 2014)
