The Faßlberg is a 356 meter high mountain in the 13th district of Hietzing in Vienna .
geography
The Faßlberg is located in the Maurer Forest in the south of the Lainzer Tiergarten on the border with the 23rd Viennese district of Liesing . To the east of the Faßlberg are the Antonshöhe and the Wilde Berg , to the northwest the Kleine Eichberg . In the north and west the Faßlberg is surrounded by the Gütenbach or one of its source streams. The mountain is part of the Wienerwaldgebirge , the northeasternmost branch of the Eastern Alps .
history
The Faßlberg is probably named after the Faßlwiese in the northeast, which was occupied earlier. This was already in 1819 as Fassel u. Stier Wiese is mentioned in a document. The name may come from the shape ( barrel ) of the meadow. Another possible interpretation of the name is its original designation. Vasel was a Middle High German name for a male cattle used for reproduction, such as a breeding bull or boar . However, the use of the meadow as pasture has not been documented.
