Specialist for media and information services

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The specialist for media and information services (or FaMI for short ) has been a state-recognized training occupation in Germany since June 3, 1998 .

General

There are five disciplines :

A characteristic of the exercise of the profession of “specialist for media and information services” is their mediating function in the “ information society ”, which requires careful and responsible handling of media and information. Safe handling and use of technological and organizational aids is essential for this .

This enables you to analyze tasks on the basis of professional competence , to identify possible solutions and to present the results . The development of a citizen / customer-oriented communication ability is to be given particular weight.

Places of work and areas of application

Workplaces are media and press archives, radio and television, municipal and state archives, public and academic libraries , corporate libraries , information brokers , information and documentation centers, specialized information centers and other database vendors , photo agencies, media centers (formerly image areas called), museums , hospitals and other Healthcare institutions, pharmaceutical companies, universities and research institutions.

Vocational training

The training is dual and lasts three years. Under certain conditions there are opportunities to shorten the training period to two and a half or two years. Depending on the training company (public service or private sector), federal or state institutions (e.g. the Cologne district government in North Rhine-Westphalia) or the chambers of industry and commerce form the responsible body under the BBiG. Due to the overall small number of trainees, vocational school lessons take place at a number of central locations that are distributed across the federal states. B. at the municipal vocational school for media professions in Munich, in Baden-Württemberg at the Hermann Gundert School in Calw , in North Rhine-Westphalia at four different locations, u. a. at the Joseph DuMont Vocational College in Cologne or at the Karl Schiller Vocational College in Dortmund. For the Free State of Saxony, the training takes place at the Gutenberg School in Leipzig.

Educational level of the trainees

The course, designed for students with an intermediate level of education (secondary school leaving certificate, technical college entrance qualification, intermediate school leaving certificate (MSA)), is increasingly being used by high school graduates, dropouts and even university graduates. In vocational school this often leads to noticeable differences in performance between individual students. In the case of the more highly qualified, due to the training content, which according to the conception is at a medium level, sometimes the feeling of being under-challenged, combined with the knowledge of a comparably low starting salary - entry pay is after the vocational training in the public service i. d. Usually pay group 5, with a slightly higher claim increasingly EG 6. Depending on the employer at the federal, state or local level, the starting salary ranges between 1500 and 1650 euros net with full employment.

Composition by subject

The five subject areas are involved to varying degrees in the total number of trainees. The fact that about 75% of the trainees come from the libraries still creates a certain "library-heavy" training at the vocational schools. In second place is the archive with around 10% , around 8% are in the field of information & documentation, only around 5% come from the field of medical documentation and only a tiny number of trainees come from the field of picture agencies, from just times 2%.

retraining

For people who have already completed other training, there is the option of in-company or inter-company retraining , which usually lasts two years. In addition, providers such as the Hessian Administrative School Association conduct preparatory courses for admission to examinations as external applicants, especially for lateral entrants with several years of relevant professional experience in libraries, for the final examination in the training occupation "Specialist for media and information services".

Training opportunities

In the archives area, a higher qualification to a Bachelor or Master as part of the second educational path in Germany is still associated with very large hurdles. Questions about this should be directed to the German Association of Archivists, the University of Applied Sciences in Potsdam, the University of Archival Science in Potsdam, the training facility in Bavaria and the state archives. Since 2012, after completing your training, you have the option of upgrading to become a specialist in information services . In NRW, this extra-occupational training to become a certified business administrator is organized and carried out by the ZBIW - Center for Library and Information Science Continuing Education - of the Cologne University of Applied Sciences . The advanced training exams are held nationwide by an examination committee of the Cologne district government. In Hesse, the Hessian Administrative School Association conducts preparatory courses for the advanced training examination as a specialist in information services.

There are also technical college courses, also part-time, in library science, information science and tw. in archives (Bachelor) for professional development in question. In Bavaria, with the Abitur and successfully passing the examination by the LPA (State Personnel Committee), training to become a BA librarian is possible.

labour market

In the archives area, due to the increasing demand for corresponding specialist staff in the context of analog and digital long-term archiving as well as the retirement of many archive employees, vacancies are increasingly being offered. Likewise, positions in the central administrative area are advertised more often, which require specialist knowledge for the management of a central registry, but do not necessarily require family training. This has significantly improved job prospects and the opportunities for permanent employment. Around half of those who have completed their training are taken on by the training institution (in some cases for a limited period), around a third switch to another employer in the same industry, the remaining fifth strive for an unrelated job, further vocational training or a degree.

From the point of view of career starters or job changers, etc., positive effects on the labor market have. a. the following factors:

  • After the wave of professionalization of the 1960s and 1970s, the age structure in libraries and archives is structured in such a way that a relatively large number of skilled workers retire from work for reasons of age and jobs are accordingly vacant.
  • The growing archive and library holdings make it necessary to hire staff, despite a large number of special tasks in digitization.
  • FaMIs cause significantly less personnel expenses for the employer than z. B. Archivists or librarians (E9 fee regulations). In times of tight public finances, despite the lower professional qualifications, e.g. FaMIs (mostly E5 or E6) are preferred over academically trained specialists, partly for financial reasons. It is essential that the focus of activities and scope of tasks are taken into account in accordance with the remuneration (a comparison of the requirements in the archive area, for example in the job portal of the Marburg Archive School).
  • In the library sector in particular, the proportion of female employees is very high at around 80%. This means that the proportion of employees who leave the job temporarily or permanently before reaching the age limit (e.g. in connection with bringing up children) is higher than in jobs with predominantly male employees.

Library Secretary

The training to become a library secretary lasts two years and takes place in the middle library service in civil service on revocation as a library secretary candidate . As part of the theoretical training, the trainee attends one or two months of central courses in a corresponding technical school. The practical training takes place in a library. Practical lessons and internships in other libraries round off the training. Training as a civil servant has lost its importance since the establishment of the specialist for media and information services and is currently (as of 2018) suspended in all federal states.

Assistant to libraries

On June 3, 1998 (amending ordinance of March 15, 2000), the apprenticeship as a specialist for media and information services replaced the two-year apprenticeship as assistant at libraries.

Library skilled worker

In the former GDR, library workers were trained from 1976 to 1990 in a system comparable to the dual system in a two-year training course. The training qualification is equivalent to that of the library assistant / specialist for media and information services. The recognition of GDR educational qualifications is based on Article 37, Paragraph 1 of the Unification Treaty in conjunction with the resolution of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) of 10/11. October 1991, last changed on November 30, 2000. Responsible for the recognition of the GDR educational qualification is the science or culture ministry of the federal state in which the educational institution is or was located at which the qualification was obtained.
