School history

The Karl Schiller Vocational College of the City of Dortmund emerged from the Commercial Schools II. These have their common roots (together with the commercial schools I and III) in the “Dortmund Commercial Teachers”, which were founded in 1889 as a joint effort by the city of Dortmund and the Chamber of Commerce. The former Commercial Schools II emerged in 1959 from the first division of the “Municipal Commercial Schools”. The division was necessary because the school, with over 11,000 students at the time, had become too big. In 1966 the grammar school branch was attached to the higher commercial school as a school experiment. This lasted until 1989 and was replaced by the upper school level of the economy and administration type. Also in 1966, the Commercial Schools II received permission to operate the technical colleges for business. In 1993, the Fachschule für Wirtschaft, a training course in the field of further education, was introduced. On June 15, 1999 the vocational college was renamed 'Karl-Schiller-Berufskolleg der Stadt Dortmund'. In accordance with the law, the school committee had given all Dortmund vocational colleges its own name and made a contribution to better differentiating between the eight vocational schools.

School program

The model is anchored in the school program of the Karl Schiller Vocational College : The Karl Schiller Vocational College is a commercial school that recognizes the heterogeneity of its learners, accepts and uses them in order to promote them individually in such a way that they are in professional, social and to be able to act actively, responsibly and sustainably in private contexts. The Karl Schiller Vocational College sees itself as a learning organization,

  • in which respect, tolerance and team spirit are expected and lived,
  • which is based on individualized learning processes and advises and promotes its students,
  • who realizes numerous collaborations and projects to optimize learning processes,
  • who systematically evaluates its processes and ensures their sustainability,
  • in which the pupils as well as partners outside of school participate cooperatively in the development of school life.

The individual educational programs of the school specifically concretise the model formulated in this way through annually evaluated and updated target agreements .

Individual support

The Ministry for Schools and Further Education of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia awarded the Karl Schiller Vocational College in 2008 the seal of approval for individual support . This seal is awarded to schools that, in successful practice, individually support students in different areas. Areas of individual advancement to be highlighted at the Karl Schiller Vocational College are:

  • the concept of self-regulated learning throughout the vocational school , which among other things enables individualized learning processes,
  • the individualized promotion of spelling, grammar and punctuation through cooperation with the Gutschrift-Institut,
  • the individualized promotion of mathematical skills,
  • the extensive study and career orientation concept and
  • the extensive range of differentiation courses.

Since 2009, the Karl Schiller Vocational College has also been a support school in the field of individual support and thus also acts as an advisory body for other schools.
