Family Fugue is a jazz album by Bucky Pizzarelli and John Pizzarelli . The 2010 recordings were released on April 1, 2011 on Arbors Records .

background

Father and son Pizzarelli have worked together frequently over the years, which is not surprising, wrote Ken Dryden, as Patriarch Bucky taught his son John to play the guitar and helped him with his first professional appearances when he followed his father to become a professional musician work. Bucky and John have released numerous albums together since 1980. Most of the tracks that were created during the Family Fugue recording sessions came from two studio sessions in the fall of 2010, in which both musicians played seven-string electric guitars. Pianist Larry Fuller , bassist Martin Pizzarelli and drummer Tony Tedesco - all members of John Pizzarelli's regular band at the time - are brought in for a swinging three-song medley of tracks associated with Benny Goodman and during a 2010 concert were played in Tanglewood.

reception

Ken Dryden gave the album 4½ (out of five) stars in Allmusic and praised it as a pleasure to hear the elaborate fugue that the guitarists begin with their rendition of "All the Things You Are". Her shimmering, luxuriously conscious version of "Stardust" is "one for the ages". Her reading of “What's New” is “lyrical without being overly sentimental. The musicians make each of their performances sound effortless, no matter how often they have played them. In the Pizzarelli family it is clear that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree and the music they produce is guaranteed to be delicious. "
