Farandnear is an 89  acres (36  hectare ) nature reserve near the city of Shirley in the state of Massachusetts in the United States , administered by The Trustees of Reservations .

history

Charles E. Goodspeed bought 3 acres (1.2 hectares) of land on what is now the reserve in 1902 and built a shingle- style house on it for his asthma- suffering daughter Miriam . He referred to this house as "Farandnear" ( German literally FernundNah ) because the city of Shirley, 50  mi (80.5  km ) from their main residence in Boston, meant a two-day journey on horseback, but was close enough to to be able to use the house at least seasonally. The next three generations of the Goodspeed family, who ran the Goodspeed Booksellers bookstore in Boston from 1898 to 1993 , also used the property and expanded it so that it could be used all year round. They enlarged the house and built a small golf course that was also accessible to the residents of Shirley.

In 1939 the house fell victim to a fire and was replaced by a new two-family house. Arthur Banks, who also belonged to the family, inherited the property, but only stayed there in the summer months due to his professional activity as a professor for the documentation of world politics. He added his country two additional plots added: first one Cranberries -Sumpf, who as co-operative was managed by some families from Shirley, and on the other 10 acres (4 hectares) large mixing of grassland and a forest of hemlock .

About Arthur built, a pine - Arboretum , which he called "Pinetum" ( pine is the English word for pine) called. More than 80 species of Coniferopsida grow there . In spring 2001 the American Conifer Society published an article on this.
