Farkhor ( Tajik Фархор ; Russian Пархар ) is a town in the extreme south of Tajikistan , near the border with Afghanistan , in the province of Khatlon . Farkhor is the capital of the district of the same name.

location

Farkhor is located 122 kilometers as the crow flies southeast of the Tajik capital Dushanbe on the Pandsch River , which forms the border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan. Around the district there are several rural sub -districts ( jamoat ), which roughly correspond to municipalities. The A385 road runs through Farkhor and leads to the capital Dushanbe via Danghara and Norak .

population

Around 22,900 people lived in Farkhor in January 2016. This means that around 15% of the total population of the Farkhor district live in the capital of the same name.

history

Farkhor has been known as a town of farmers, traders, and artisans since the 10th century AD. The city also appears in the Persian national epic Shahnama in connection with the evil king Afrasiab . In March 1921, the Soviets took control of Farkhor, which in the 1920s developed into a center of the Basmachi , a resistance group against Soviet rule. Many Farkhor residents fled the Soviet Union to Afghanistan in the 1930s . The Fakhor district, which still exists today, was founded on November 23, 1930.

Infrastructure

Farkhor is in a very poor region and has inadequate infrastructure. The water supply in particular is a problem as the surrounding cotton fields require enormous amounts of water. There are several initiatives by the Tajik government to improve conditions in the Farkhor district and some surrounding communities.

Chubek irrigation system

On the one hand, the Chubek Irrigation System (CIS) is intended to direct water from the Chubek district to the Farkhor district. This system dates back to the Soviet era and has been in operation since 1964, but modernization is required as sedimentary rock blocks the pipes, significantly reducing the flow capacity. The Tajik government has applied for aid from the Asian Development Bank to set up a commission to improve the water supply, renew the irrigation system and build more efficient agriculture in the region .

Municipal infrastructure project

Another initiative is the Municipal Infrastructure Project (MIDP), which aims to improve the infrastructure in five districts in southern Tajikistan, including Farkhor. In Farkhor there are four main goals:

  • Improvement of the water supply
  • Improvement of sanitation, construction of public toilets
  • Renewal of waste disposal
  • Procurement of the required equipment

This project was submitted to the World Bank in March 2013 with a request for funding for the project.

Air Force Base

Farkhor Air Base is four kilometers from Farkhor. This is of great strategic importance as it has been used by the Indian armed forces since May 2002. The Indian Air Force now has a base west of the Kashmir region , which is a constant point of contention between India and Pakistan.
