Lafayette "Fat" Lever (born August 18, 1960 in Pine Bluff , Arkansas ) is a retired American basketball player . He played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for eleven seasons .

NBA career

Lever was selected in the 1982 NBA draft in 11th place by the Portland Trail Blazers , for which he was active for two years. Lever celebrated his breakthrough with his move to the Denver Nuggets in 1984. At the side of Alex English , he was one of the best point guards in the league in the 80s and was called up in the NBA All-Star Game in 1988 and 1990 .

His rebound strength for a point guard was noticeable . So he brought in 1988-1989 and 1989-1990 each 9.3 rebounds on average. Due to his position as a development player and the resulting many assists , Lever achieved many triple doubles . In his career, he collected 43 triple doubles, which currently brings him eighth place (as of January 2017) in NBA history. He was also considered a strong ball thief and ranks 22nd in NBA history in steals.

With Denver he reached the playoffs every year between 1985 and 1990, but a championship never jumped out of it. In 1990 he switched to the Dallas Mavericks , where he was unable to continue his Nuggets times due to injury problems. In the 1990-91 season, he only played 4 games, 1991-92 only 31, and the 1992-93 season he sat out completely. In his senior year, he played more than 80 games for the first time in years.

Lever ended his career in 1994. In 752 games, Lever scored 13.9 points, 6.0 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 2.2 steals on average.
