Joan Lind

Joan Louise Lind (after marriage to Van Blom; born September 26, 1952 in Long Beach , California ; † August 28, 2015 ) was an American rower . In 1976 she won the Olympic silver medal in the one and 1984 Olympic silver medal in the quadruple sculls .

Athletic career

1.75 m tall Lind began rowing in 1971 in her freshman year at California State University, Long Beach . In 1973 she took sixth place in the one at the European Championships, which are also open to non-European women . At the 1975 World Championships , she rowed to fifth place.

Lind also represented the United States at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, where women's Olympic rowing competitions were on the program for the first time. In Montreal, Lind took second place behind Christine Scheiblich from the GDR in the second run and qualified for the final via the repechage . Scheiblich won there with a lead of 65 hundredths of a second, Joan Lind received the silver medal.

At the World Championships in 1977 , 1978 and 1979 , Joan Lind finished fifth in the single. After the Olympic boycott in 1980 , she ended her athletic career.

The Californian returned again for the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The US double scull with Anne Marden , Lisa Rohde , Joan Lind, Virginia Gilder and helmsman Kelly Rickon won the second heat and received the silver medal in the final behind the Romanians and just ahead of the Danish boat.

Joan Lind was married to three-time Olympian John Van Blom . After graduating from college, she worked as a teacher and trainer.
