Federico Vairo Moramarco (born January 27, 1930 in Rosario , † December 7, 2010 in Buenos Aires ) was an Argentine football player. He took part in the 1958 World Cup with the national team of his home country .
Career
Club career
Federico Vairo began his football career in 1950 with the Rosario Central club in his hometown. At Rosario Central, where he played in his youth, the defender stayed until 1954 before moving to River Plate in Buenos Aires in the capital of Argentina . In a team with other Argentine football greats of the time such as Ángel Labruna , Ermindo Onega and Norberto Menéndez , Federico Vairo won his first Argentine championship in 1955 when the noble club of Argentina took first place in the Primera División with seven points ahead of the Racing Club from Avellaneda occupied. In the following season, River Plate was at the top of the table, this time with two points ahead of CA Lanús . In 1957 River Plate managed to defend its title again, with eight points ahead of CA San Lorenzo de Almagro , first place was achieved. Federico Vairo stayed with River Plate until 1959, but did not win another title. From 1960 he played for CD O'Higgins in the Chilean city of Rancagua . With the club he was relegated from the Primera División Chiles in 1963 , but managed to return to the first class the following year by taking first place in the second division. This first place in the Primera División B is the only title win from CD O'Higgins to date. Vairo stayed in Rancagua until 1966. In that year he moved to Colombia to Deportivo Cali , where he let his career end until 1967. After the end of his active career, Federico Vairo initially distanced himself from the football business. From 1999 to 2010 he worked as a scout for River Plate in the province of Santa Fe . On December 7, 2010, Vairo died of stomach cancer in Buenos Aires at the age of 80 .
National team
Federico Vairo was used 41 times in the Argentine national soccer team between 1955 and 1958. Argentina coach Guillermo Stábile called him into the squad for the 1958 World Cup . At the tournament in Sweden he was used in all three games of the Argentinians, who were disappointing at the tournament. Already after the preliminary round Argentina was eliminated from the bottom of the group after only one win against Northern Ireland (3: 1) and two defeats against Germany (1: 3) and Czechoslovakia (1: 6). Then Vairo ended his national team career.
