Norberto Menéndez (born December 14, 1936 in Buenos Aires , † May 26, 1994 there ) was an Argentine football player. He took part in the 1958 World Cup with the national team of his home country .

Career

Club career

Norberto Menéndez began his football career in 1954 with CA River Plate , the noble club in Argentina from Buenos Aires . In a team with other Argentine football greats of the time such as Ángel Labruna , Félix Loustau , Amadeo Carrizo or José Ramos Delgado , Menéndez won his first Argentine football championship in his second season at River Plate in 1955, when the club took first place in the Primera División with seven points ahead of the Racing Club from Avellaneda . In the two years that followed, they managed to defend their title twice, with River Plate taking first place after the last matchday ahead of CA Lanús and CA San Lorenzo de Almagro . The 1958 season ended for River Plate in fifth place, the championship won the Racing Club. In 1960 Norberto Menéndez left River Plate and joined CA Huracán , also from Buenos Aires. After a year and only sixteen games for Huracán, he joined the Boca Juniors , the great rival of his former club River Plate, in 1962 . With Boca he won three other national championship titles. In a team with Antonio Roma , Silvio Marzolini and Antonio Rattín , Menéndez won his first championship with Boca in 1962 when they finished first in the table with two points ahead of River Plate. In 1964 and 1965 he was again champion with the Boca Juniors, in these two years you left CA Independiente and again River Plate behind. Norberto Menéndez stayed with the Boca Juniors until 1967, before moving to CA Colón in Santa Fe to move to Defensor after only one year and twelve games for the club in Uruguay . Menéndez ended his active career in 1971 at the age of 35 wearing the Montevideo club's jersey .

National team

In the Argentine national soccer team Norberto Menéndez was used fourteen times in 1957 and 1958. Argentina coach Guillermo Stábile called him into the squad for the 1958 World Cup in Sweden . In qualifying for the World Cup, he scored three of the ten Argentinian goals. In the tournament he was used in all three games of his team, in the 3-1 win in the second group game against Northern Ireland he even managed to score 2-1 in the 55th minute of the game. Four minutes later, Ludovico Avio made it 3-1 after Omar Corbatta had equalized the initial lead of the Northern Irish by Peter McParland for Argentina . The success against Northern Ireland, however, was the only one for Argentina at the World Cup, in the other two group games you went as a loser from the field. Against the defending champions Germany it was 1: 3 against Czechoslovakia even 1: 6, whereby the last place in group 1 was occupied.
