Fedossij Justynowytsch Schtschus , also Fedir Schtschus , ( Ukrainian Федір Щусь ; * March 13th July / March 25th 1893 greg. In the village Velykomychajliwka , Yekaterinoslav Governorate , Russian Empire ; † June 27, 1921 , near Khorushivka , Sumy Oblast , Ukraine) was a Ukrainian anarchist and partisan .
During the Russian Civil War he was one of the leading commanders of the Revolutionary Insurgent Army of Ukraine , an anarchist popular movement with up to 50,000 volunteer partisans, and right-hand man of its leader Nestor Makhno .
biography
Shchus was born into a family of farm workers in the village of Velykomyhajlivka in the east of what is now Pokrovsky District , Dnepropetrovsk Oblast . At the beginning of 1915 he was called up for military service and served as a sailor in the Black Sea Fleet on the now obsolete standard liner Ioann Slatoust . Here he learned boxing, wrestling and jiu-jitsu .
In 1917 he returned to his homeland and became one of the most active members of the Black Guard . He founded his own partisan group, with which he fought from June 1918 as their commander against the hetmanate of Pavlo Skoropadskyj and the troops of the Central Powers . In a battle against soldiers of the hetmanate his group was defeated and he fled with six other partisans to the Dybrywskomwald, where he met Nestor Machno on September 26, 1918 and joined him.
In Machno's army he rose quickly and from May 1921 was chief of staff of the 2nd group of the insurgent army. Shchus was killed in action against the 8th Cavalry Division of the Bolshevik Red Cossacks in a field between the villages of Khorushivka and Besedivka in Nedryhajliw Raion of Sumy Oblast.
