Life

The ancestors of the painter with the well-known Black Forest name came from Raitenbuch near Lenzkirch. His grandfather married in Kappel and lived there at what would later become the Fallerhof. Felix Faller was not married and had a sister, Mathilde Faller (born November 22, 1841). In autumn 1848 Felix Faller was apprenticed to the painter Georg Philipp Schmitt in Heidelberg . His son Guido Philipp Schmitt also worked there . In 1851 Felix Faller returned to Kappel. In 1852 he went to Munich . His self-portrait from this time (1854) was in the possession of the Black Forest collector Oskar Spiegelhalder . According to unsubstantiated information, he is said to have worked as a photographer in Wesel for six years . He returned to Kappel from Wesel around 1861, after which he is said to have been a photographer in Brussels for two years . From 1863 he spent the next few years at home. He drew a lot, especially the Feldberg , where he made an “all-round panorama ”, the so-called “Große Rundschau”, which appeared in print. In 1871 he went to Stuttgart where he spent the next 17 years until his death, interrupted by many vacations in his home in the Black Forest. In 1878 he drew the Großer Alpenpanorama von Höchenschwand , which also appeared in print. In spring 1887 he was admitted to the sister house in Stuttgart, where he died on May 11th.
