The rock speedwell ( Veronica fruticans ) is a species of plant in the plantain family (Plantaginaceae).
description
The rock speedwell grows as a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 5 to 20 cm. The base of the stem is woody and has short hairs. The leaves are mostly sessile or have a very short petiole. With a length of 0.5 to 2 cm, the simple leaf blade is narrow to broadly oval and has entire or finely toothed margins.
The flowering period extends from June to July. Usually four to six flowers are arranged in loose, terminal, racemose inflorescences . The calyx and the flower stalks are hairy, but have no glands. The corolla is dark blue and has a white throat. The capsule fruit is broadly oval, flattened and barely edged. The style is almost as long as the fruit.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.
Occurrence
The distribution area of the rock honorary award includes Europe and Greenland.
The rock speedwell occurs on stony slopes and in alpine pastures in the Alps. It thrives in subalpine and alpine zones up to altitudes of 2390 meters. It is a character species of the class of crevice and wall joint societies (Asplenietea trichomanes) and occurs mainly in societies of Androsacion vandellii, in the Black Forest especially in Woodsio-Asplenietum septentrionalis. In the Alps, it occurs primarily in societies of the Festucion variae association , but also in stony grass pastures ( Nardion ), in societies of the Sedo-Scleranthion association and in crooked sedge ( Caricion curvulae ).
