Menosgada (town above the Main Valley) was a Celtic metropolis on the Upper Main , mentioned by the Greek geographer Claudius Ptolemy , which was probably on the Staffelberg (near Bad Staffelstein in the Upper Franconian district of Lichtenfels ).

Ever since the Hallstatt period settled Celts on the Staffelberg. During the Latène period , around 200 BC. BC, the simple early Celtic defense system was expanded into a 49 hectare oppidum , which was secured against the neighboring Alb area with a 2800 meter long protective wall and pitfalls . Menosgada was the northernmost oppidum in what is now the state of Bavaria. An acropolis about three hectares protruded from its center .

Menosgada went around 50 BC. When the Romans tried unsuccessfully to advance through the Maingraben to the east as far as the Elbe and encountered massive resistance from Germanic tribes. Times were getting too restless. In 50 AD, Menosgada was located at the northernmost tip of the Narisker range . Later, after the Migration Period , the area was repopulated to a lesser extent .
