Felsenkeller (Dresden)
The Felsenkeller in Dresden is a former beer brewery and is located in Plauenschen Grund , the valley of the Weißeritz between Dresden-Plauen and Freital .
The Dresdner Felsenkeller was one of the largest breweries in Germany around 1900. Beer is no longer brewed here today. The traditional Dresdner Felsenkeller Pilsner is now produced in the new Feldschlößchen brewery in Dresden-Coschütz , not far away .
History of the brewery
On September 12, 1856, the joint stock company Brauerei zum Felsenkeller AG was founded with starting capital of 300,000 thalers. The name refers to the ice cellar . This 66 meter long tunnel system, also called "ice worm camp" after the trademark, was carved into the rocky slope near the former brewery in 1857. Legend has it that the ice worm lives in this vaulted cellar . The water was initially drawn from one and later from two of its own wells. These were located in the valley of the Kaitzbach near Kleinnaundorf .
The site in Plauenschen Grund was acquired and construction work began. The Dresden brewery guild protested massively against the AG, as they suspected high sales drops in their breweries. The brewery was then opened in 1859. In the beginning only Bavarian lager was produced, from 1880 the production was switched to Pilsner beer.
Felsenkeller AG bought other breweries on a massive scale in order to expand and withstand the pressure of competition. At the end of 1905, the Pirna malt factory became part of the company . J. Ph. Lipps & Co. affiliated
Further investments in other companies were in 1943:
- Schloß-Brauerei Chemnitz AG, Chemnitz
- Sächsische Union-Brauerei AG, Zwickau (Sachs.)
- Feldschlößchen-Brauerei AG in Chemnitz-Kappel
- Actien-Bierbrauerei zu Reisewitz , Dresden
- Brauerei zum Felsenkeller Pirna AG, Pirna
- Brewery "Glückauf" Richard Huebsch GmbH, Gersdorf i. Sat
During the Second World War , some of the brewery's buildings were destroyed in the bombing raid on Dresden . In 1946 the AG was expropriated and nationalized. In 1949, it joined the Association of Nationally Owned Breweries and Malting Industries . From 1952 it was run under VEB Dresdner Felsenkellerbrauerei . After the Dresden breweries began to merge in the 1960s, this also affected the Felsenkellerbrauerei in 1964, which was connected as Werk West .
In 1973 the brewery achieved an annual output of around 500,000 hl. Another centralization took place in 1978. 15 breweries and malt houses in Dresden were merged as the Dresden beverage combine. The brewery's ice worm was the trademark of this combine. Bottled beer production was discontinued in 1981 and relocated to the newly built Coschützer brewery . In 1981 the Felsenkellerbrauerei produced 606,000 hl of draft and tank beer. In 1991 the Sächsische Brau Union AG Felsenkellerbrauerei was founded.
The brewery was closed in 1991. The brewery site is now classified as an industrial monument. As the “Felsenkeller Dresden industrial area”, the buildings accommodate over 210 private and commercial tenants.
In the brewery's former ice store there is a laboratory of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and the Technical University of Dresden with Germany's first underground particle accelerator .
