The Fennville AVA is a wine-growing region in the US state of Michigan . Modern viticulture began in this area around the mid-1960s, and it was recognized as an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1981.

location

The recognized vineyards of the Fennville AVA growing area are spread across the Allegan County administrative area . The area lies as an enclave within the parent Lake Michigan Shore AVA and borders Lake Michigan to the west, the Kalamazoo River to the north and the Black River to the south. The sandy soils of the region are the result of earlier glacier activity.

The proximity to Lake Michigan has a mitigating effect on the region's climate, so that Cabernet Franc, a grape variety known from Bordeaux, also thrives. During the comparatively short growing season of max. 160 days in summer the thermometer can temporarily climb to over 30 ° C.
