Lake Michigan Shore AVA is a wine-growing region in the US state of Michigan recognized since October 13, 1983 by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives .

location

The denomination of origin located in the southwest of the state is known as the fruit belt . Almost 90% of Michigan's vineyards are within the defined area that has been viticulture since 1867. Because much of the vines are processed into juice and jam, the Lake Michigan Shore AVA only provides 50 percent of the state's wine production. The majority of juice and jam is made from Concord and Niagara grapes. However, these varieties do not play a role in the development of wine .

In the north the area is bounded by the Kalamazoo River . The vineyards are a maximum of 72 km from the shores of Lake Michigan and benefit fully from the moderating effect of the water masses on the climate. Heavy ground frosts are buffered by the snow masses of the lake effect snow .

The growing season of the wine-growing region is on average 2 weeks longer than in the neighboring Leelanau Peninsula AVA and Old Mission Peninsula AVA , which are located further north . The Fennville AVA sub-zone occupies a special position .
