Chelois

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chelois is a red wine variety . The red variety is a new breed between the varieties Seibel 5163 and Seibel 5593. The cross was made by the French breeder Albert Seibel . Due to the influence of the parents, the hybrid vine Chelois possesses the genes of the wild grapes Vitis labrusca , Vitis riparia , Vitis vinifera , Vitis rupestris , Vitis cinerea and Vitis aestivalis . Chelois belongs to the Seibel family .

Before 1958, it was grown on almost 900 hectares in France. Today it is in Canada (approx. 3 hectares) and on the cold North American east coast (65 hectares) for example in the US states of New York (→ Viticulture in New York , Finger Lake AVA ), Ohio (→ Viticulture in Ohio ), Missouri (→ viticulture in Missouri ) and in Pennsylvania (→ viticulture in Pennsylvania ).

The early ripening and high-yielding variety has good resistance to the vine diseases powdery mildew and downy mildew . It only produces moderate wines , which when developed as a rosé wine gives the best results.
