Ferdinand Brandner (born November 17, 1903 in Vienna , † December 20, 1986 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian engine designer.

Brandner studied in Vienna. There he got involved within the youth movement-reformed German guild . At the beginning of his professional career, he designed diesel engines for locomotives . From 1937 to 1945 he was a designer at the Junkers factories , at the end of the war with the rank of SS standard leader . He constructed large aircraft engines, u. a. the Jumo 222 . He played a decisive role in the fact that the Ostmark aircraft engine works were built in Wiener Neudorf .

He was deported to the Soviet Union in 1946 , where he headed the development of various engines such as the Kuznetsov NK-12 , a PTL engine with coaxial propellers. It is still the most powerful turboprop engine, used to power the Tu-95 heavy bomber and the An-22 transport aircraft .

From September 24, 1957 to April 30, 1958, Brandner was under contract as managing director of BMW Triebwerkbau GmbH, but without ever having worked for the company. From 1960 to 1969 he worked in Egypt on the development and construction of the E-300 jet engine for the Helwan HA-300 jet aircraft designed by Messerschmitt . At the beginning of the 1970s, he was given a visiting professorship for engine construction in Beijing .
