Ferdinand Friebe

Ferdinand Friebe (born February 2, 1894 in Graz ; † March 30, 1980 ) was an Austrian medium and long-distance runner and entrepreneur.

Life

Ferdinand Friebe was born on February 2, 1894 at Sporgasse 21 in Graz. His father was the businessman Carl Adolf Friebe (* 1858, † 1914), who registered a mechanic trade at Elisabethinergasse 22 in 1883, his mother was Johanna Friebe, née Urf (* 1869, † 1943).

In World War I he came as an ensign on the Eastern Front and was promoted to lieutenant in August 1916 . After the war he returned to Graz, passed the master craftsman's examination and, with his brother Johann, took over the family business of installing electrical operating systems with the connection of high-voltage systems at Sporgasse 21.

During the Second World War he was drafted again and served at the end of the war in the German submarine bunker in Lorient . After the war he was taken prisoner by the US until 1946.

In 1957 he received the professional title of Kommerzialrat and in 1962 he became a citizen of the city of Graz.

Career

As early as 1910, his talent was noticed at meetings for secondary school students in Graz at GAK-Platz. In addition to Ferdinand, his two brothers Johann and Wilhelm were also active in sports. At the Olympic Games in Paris in 1924, he was eliminated over 1500 m in the preliminary run.

He was Austrian champion over 1500 m eleven times (1913, 1919-1924, and 1926-1929) and five times over 800 m (1919-1923).
