occupation

Irradiés (international title: Irradiated , Eng .: "Irradiated") is a French - Cambodian documentary by Rithy Panh from 2020 . Topics are the pain and grief caused by war and the use of weapons of mass destruction .

The world premiere took place on February 28, 2020 as part of the competition at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival .

action

The focus is on survivors of the war and of operations using weapons of mass destruction, who encountered the various forms of evil, for example in trenches, on atolls , concentration camps or simply through mere silence. Among other things, the “ Hibakusha ”, the survivors of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945, are portrayed. Filmmaker Rithy Panh felt reminded of his own fate through meetings with them and eyewitness accounts. He survived the genocide committed under the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia , which he had dealt with thematically in earlier works. Nature also “has its say”, which also suffers from the consequences of war and destruction.

The film consists largely of archive recordings and is accompanied by Marceline Loridan (1928–2018). The French filmmaker survived the Holocaust and later married the well-known Dutch documentary filmmaker Joris Ivens (1898–1989).

reception

Carlo Chatrian , Artistic Director of the Berlinale, emphasized at the official launch of the competition at the end of January 2020 that there had been a lot of discussion about the inclusion of Panh's film in the program. Irradiés demanded a lot from the audience and urged them to remain vigilant. Nevertheless, it is "an important film these days" and the only documentary in the competition, even if this term is not entirely appropriate for Irradiés .

Awards

Rithy Panh competed with Irradiés for the first time for the Golden Bear , the main prize of the Berlinale. The film was awarded the Berlinale Documentary Film Prize.
