Ferdinand Piper

Ferdinand Karl Wilhelm Piper (born May 17, 1811 in Stralsund , † November 28, 1889 in Berlin ) was a German church historian and university professor .

Life

Piper was the son of the teacher Johann Heinrich S. Piper. He attended Stralsund grammar school from 1818 to 1829 . During this time he also received training on the flute and the organ . In 1829 he went to the University of Berlin . From there he actually wanted to move to the University of Bonn , but came to the University of Göttingen . Here he studied until 1833, dealt with mathematics as a writer and made contact with Carl Friedrich Gauß , among others . He then worked as a repetitionist in Göttingen . On 20 June 1835 he was with the dissertation De externa vitae Jesus Chronologia recte constituenda to Lic. Theol. PhD. He later also held the title of Dr. theol.

Piper completed his habilitation in 1840 at the suggestion of August Neander at the Berlin University in the subject of church history and then worked as a private lecturer . In 1842 he was appointed associate professor for church history and Christian archeology. In 1849, with the support of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV., He built the Christian Museum at the University of Berlin , which existed until at least 1920. He was its first director from 1849 until his death. Nikolaus Müller became a successor as director and professor . In the museum, as well as later while traveling, he also came into contact with Crown Prince Friedrich .

With the support of the royal family, Piper was able to reform the Protestant calendar, replacing the names of saints with men who had made a name for themselves in the Protestant church. From Berlin he published the Evangelical Calendar and Yearbook from 1850 to 1870 . He also succeeded in founding one of the world's first Christian Archaeological Institutes in Berlin, which he initially headed.

On June 19, 1885, Piper was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern by the King .
