The Ferlach reservoir is the backwater of the Drau from the Ferlach-Maria Rain run-of-river power station . It extends above to the Feistritz-Ludmannsdorf power plant with the Feistritz reservoir . While the Ferlach reservoir is limited on the north side by the slopes of the Sattnitz , it is partly higher on the south side than the immediate surroundings and is delimited there by a dike . The waters that the dike cuts off from the Drau are collected by the Kleine Drau , which runs southward at the foot of the dike and flows into the Drau below the power station.

The Ferlach reservoir is crossed by the Rosentalbahn and the Loiblpass Straße . The railway bridge had to be lifted when the reservoir was built and the Hollenburg bridge was rebuilt.

The fish population is described as very diverse.
