The television epitaval was the first crime series broadcast on television in the GDR and produced from 1958 to 1978 . The television epitaval can be understood as the actual beginning of the crime film in the GDR . The name goes back to the literary form of Pitaval , a collection of authentic criminal cases , founded by François Gayot de Pitaval .

history

The scenarios were written by Friedrich Karl Kaul (also under the name Friedrich Karl Hartmann ) and Walter Jupé . The programs were produced by the DFF . The real criminal case on which the respective action was based was portrayed as an actor. Not only the criminal case was presented, but also the investigation and the criminal proceedings. The cases covered a wide range of crime. Both the serial killer Karl Denke ( Der Fall Denke ) and the Heyde-Sawade affair about the re-entry of an SS medic under a false name in the Federal Republic (1963) were shown. The event was commented on by Kaul, who also summarized the case at the end and thus steered the viewer in the desired direction. The format was a journalistic and dramatic hybrid . The broadcast included several complexes such as the Pitaval of the Empire , the Weimar Pitaval , the Bonn Pitaval and cases from the time of the rule of National Socialism . The propagandistic goal was to work out alleged or actual continuities of the West German judiciary to the judiciary of the previous governments, to criticize the bourgeois legal and judicial system and to show their class character from a Marxist point of view. The view of crime conveyed by the television series is to be seen against the ideological background above all of the early socialist conception of crime . According to this, crime should die out with the increasing development of socialist society, since with free education and the provision of care for the citizens, the cause for criminal behavior should disappear, crime is above all a remnant of bourgeois class society . It was only with The Public Prosecutor has the floor from 1965 and Polizeiruf 110 from 1971 that crime in the GDR should be discussed.

The first broadcast ( Weimar Pitaval - Der Fall Saffran ) was broadcast on November 25, 1958, a total of 41 episodes were broadcast up to the last episode ( Dora Lemke murder , broadcast on June 4, 1978). In addition to the television epitaval, some similar television games were produced, such as the five-part film about the first Auschwitz trial ( Auschwitz trial. Impressions from the main negotiation , 1964).
