Festival Mediaval

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Festival-Mediaval is an annual music festival in September in Selb ( Upper Franconia / Bavaria ), which is the largest European festival in the field of medieval music . The first Festival Mediaval took place in 2008, with around 7,000 visitors attending the kick-off event. The structurally weak region on the German- Czech border was deliberately chosen as the venue for the three-day event under the motto “Crossing borders - connecting opposites - setting accents” . The musical genre shows a wide range of musical genres widespread in the medieval scene , from original interpretations of medieval music to modern medieval rock and Irish folk . In addition to the top German groups of the genre such as Corvus Corax , Schandmaul or Subway to Sally , the Festival Mediaval was also able to bring many internationally known groups to Germany, such as B. Alan Stivell from France, the Dublin Legends from Ireland, Omnia from the Netherlands, Lurte from Spain, Vedan Kolod from Russia or Skyclad from England. There is by no means the claim to develop a program that is purely divisional. Rather, bands of other obvious styles are included in order to do justice to the principle of connecting. This also results from the fact that the boundaries between the individual styles are fluid.

Supporting program

In addition to the music program, visitors to the festival are offered an extensive supporting program with content typical of the scene: a large medieval market , jugglers , fire artists , historical theater , workshops, camp life, exhibition fights , youth competitions, archery tournaments and many other program items.

In 2014, a pirate raft and a bird of prey show were publicly accessible for the first time outside the actual festival area on the Goldberg. In 2015, the program in Goldberg Bay was expanded to include many concerts and performances, including Vikings with Viking ships. This area is free to visit.

New in 2015 was the start of a series of acoustic concerts in the church with the Capella Antiqua Bambergensis & guests.

In 2016, the program was expanded to include an arena in which knight tournaments were held regularly.

Since 2019 there have been living chess performances, chess games as a theatrical performance

Special offers

The organizers repeatedly include so-called specials in the program. Faun , Omnia and Valravn increased z. B. each other through guest appearances, accompanied by Kelvin Kalvus or fire artists. There are always gigs where members of different bands give guest appearances or z. B. Haggard can be found on stage with 25 musicians. There were various CD releases and a tribute to Frank Wulff , the co-founder of Ougenweide who died unexpectedly in 2010 and who played their last concert at the Festival-Mediaval II in 2009. In 2010 and 2011 Knud Seckel performed the Nibelungenlied in full. After Poeta Magica had to cancel the performance of their EDDA in 2011 due to a severe storm, they were able to complete their project in 2013 as part of a Nordic Special with Garmarna , Valravn and other Nordic-oriented and Nordic bands, among others . During the performance, Hedningarna founding member Anders Norudde was once on stage as part of this project. The theme of the 2014 festival was an Irish-Scottish special. The special was headlined by The Dublin Legends . In 2015 there was a Celtic special with Carlos Núñez and other international stars such as Moya Brennan , Ashley Davis & Cormac de Barra, Kila, The Dolmen and others. After the 10-year anniversary in 2017 and the "Best-of-10-Years" in 2018, 2019 made a break and started a new chapter of the festival mediaval with the "New Steps". In 2020 the motto of the festival is "Rock / Metal Special", with Corvus Corax playing a program designed only for the Mediaval.
