Systematics
The following subspecies are distinguished in Germany:
- Festuca rubra subsp. rubra
- Festuca rubra subsp. juncea = rush red fescue ( Festuca unifaria ) sensu E. Patzke & GH Loos 2000
- Festuca rubra subsp. litoralis = salt meadow red fescue ( Festuca salina ) sensu E. Patzke & GH Loos 2000
- Festuca rubra subsp. pruinosa ; according to Dengler 2000 not from Festuca rubra subsp. juncea (quote: " According to STACE (1997: 846) this subspecies cannot be separated from ssp. juncea, which would then be the older and therefore valid name. ")
Further clans are mentioned in the literature. However, the systematic rank of most species , subspecies and varieties is still unclear.
description
The common red fescue is a perennial hemicryptophyte that reaches heights between 15 and 100, sometimes 120 centimeters. It grows loosely to densely grassed with runners ( rhizomes ). The ribs of the leaf tops are coarse or at most downy hairy. There are no bundles of sclerenchyma on the upper side , but in narrow groups on the lower side. The spikelets reach 6.5 to 11 millimeters in length. The lemmas are 4 to 7 millimeters long. The flowering time is from June to July.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 42, less often 14, 28, 56 or 70.
