Festus is a city of 9,660 people (as of 2000) in Missouri . It is 30 miles south of St. Louis in their metropolitan area and is part of Jefferson County .
history
Festus was founded around 1878 by WJ Adams under the name Limitville . Because the first shops were mainly saloons , the city soon received the nickname “Tanglefoot” (freely translated “drunkard”).
It was thought about incorporation with the neighboring village, but then it was decided to give the city a more venerable name. Legend has it that the name was found during a church service when the Bible was accidentally opened and the name of Porcius Festus , governor of Judea in AD 60, caught the eye.
In 1888 Festus was officially registered as the "4th order town".
The current administrative structure, with a mayor , city council and a city administrator who is responsible for the daily implementation of city council resolutions, was established in 1976.
