Fighton Simukonda

Fighton Simukonda (born February 2, 1958 , † February 15, 2016 in Chililabombwe ) was a Zambian football player and coach.

Athletic career

Simukonda began his career with the Mimbula Diggers and KB Davies before the tall defender joined Vitafoam United in the Super Division in 1980 . There he won his first title as team captain in 1981 with a 2-1 win over the Strike Rovers in the final of the Zambian National Cup . In 1982 he moved to Nkana FC , with whom he won the national championship title in 1983, 1985, 1986, 1988 and 1989 and the double in 1986 by winning the cup . In 1989 Simukonda moved to South Africa to join Jomo Cosmos , and in 1991 he moved to Blackpool Gauteng . At the same time, he had become a Zambian national player , and he led the "KK 11" onto the field several times as captain. The greatest success of his international career was winning the CECAFA Cup in 1984 , when Malawi was defeated on penalties in the final . He was denied further major tournaments.

In 1992 Simukonda took over his first coaching position with the South African Dangerous Darkies , in the first season he worked as a player-coach. In 1994 he returned to Zambia, where he looked after Roan United and later also temporarily coached the Zambian national team. In the following years he coached various teams in his home country, with Zanaco FC and ZESCO United he won the championship title. Most recently, he was responsible for Nchanga Rangers FC and the Zambian U-23 national team .

Simukonda, who suffers from diabetes mellitus , has had regular hospital stays since December 2015. He died a few days after his 58th birthday in the Konkola Mine Hospital in Chilabombwe.
