history

The branch church of the Kals parish church corresponds to the type of a Romanesque country church from the time around 1200. The first documentary mention comes from the year 1366, when the church with an altar was consecrated by the bishop Heinrich von Lavant . At the same time, the move to the Sunday after Mariae's birth took place this year. The Gothic tower dates from the 15th century, other building activities have been handed down from the years 1621 and 1736, whereby in 1621 the pointed arch opening was possibly increased and the triangular gable was walled up. The church was closed during the Josephine Reforms , but reopened in 1794. In 1872 the nave was given a barrel vault, while the presbytery was raised and vaulted. In addition, the facade was given a new structure. In the course of the restoration of the interior in 1964/1965, the neo-baroque and historicist paintings were removed and the Romanesque wall paintings exposed. Further renovation work followed in the 1990s, during which, among other things, the original plaster on the tower was preserved and the church facade was repainted.

Archaeological excavations carried out in 1964 and 1994/95 brought to light the remains of a Roman and early medieval settlement area. In addition, there are two previous phases in the masonry of the church.

Building

inside view

The church consists of a narrow, single-nave nave with a semicircular apse and a massive, north-facing tower with a square floor plan. The nave has a shingle-covered gable roof, the Gothic tower an eight-sided pointed helmet with a ball, cross and weather valve. The church entrance on the north side is a modern rectangular portal with a towed canopy. Historicist, plastered pilaster strips emphasize the edges of the nave, while the incised ashlars emphasize those of the tower.

The nave is vaulted with a barrel. The remains of Romanesque frescoes have been preserved in the apse and nave. The high altar is an early Baroque altarpiece with gold-plated Schnitzdekor, an altarpiece depicting the battle of St. George and the Dragon and a copy of grace image Mariahilf by Lucas Cranach the extract . Both the altar and the paintings date from around 1680/90. Instead of the side altars, the branch church is equipped with two small, wooden wall shrines with gilded decoration from the end of the 17th century. The wall shrines house carved statuettes of the shrine Herz-Mariae (left) and Herz-Jesu (right). In the excerpt there are depictions of the baby Jesus and the cross. The statuettes were re-carved after the wall shrines were stolen in 1986 and found without any figures.

There is also a relief of St. George fighting the dragon from around 1880, a panel from the end of the 17th century depicting a crucifixion with Maria Magdalena, the former high altar sheet of the parish church of Kals with the picture of St. Rupert in Heaven from 1844 and a pair of paintings with depictions of the Sacred Heart and the Sacred Heart of Mary from the late 18th century.
