The Roman Catholic Church of St. Leonhard in the bath is in the valley of Leonhard stream in 1110 meters above sea level in the hamlet Benesirnitz in the town of Albeck in district Feldkirchen in Carinthia . The high quality of the furnishings in the church can be traced back to the fact that St. Leonhard im Bade was once the summer residence of the Gurk cathedral chapter .

history

The church was first mentioned in 1213. In 1350 a branch "At St. Leonhard with good water" is mentioned. In the middle of the 18th century a mission station for the conversion of Protestants was set up here, which was closed again in 1792. After a fire, the church was restored in 1808.

Building description

The church was built in several phases. The retracted choir from the middle of the 15th century is reinforced by a retaining wall on the east wall between two buttresses . The nave from the first half of the 16th century is supported by double-stepped buttresses. It has beveled pointed arch portals in the north, west and south. In the northern corner of the choir there is a massive Gothic tower with sound openings and a pyramid roof. In the wide nave, a barrel cap arches over protruding pillars. The vault is covered by a ridge network with a star, rosettes and flowers at the top. The three-axis, groin vaulted west gallery stands on two stone pillars. One capital is adorned with floral decorations, the other with simple relief heads, presumably master builder portraits, a coat of arms and a cartouche with a stonemason's mark from 1540. The original polychromy can be seen on the drawn-in, very narrow and pointed triumphal arch under the crumbling whitewash . A ribbed vault with keystones rests on consoles above the two-bay choir with a five-eighth closure . A segment-arched, grooved portal, probably from the 16th century, leads into the flat-roofed sacristy in the tower. The pointed arched choir windows from the 15th century were partially enlarged. The nave has large arched windows. In 1990 Gothic wall paintings were discovered in the choir.

High altar of the Catholic Church of St. Leonhard in the bath
Partial view of the high altar with Saint Leonhard (center). Christophorus (left) and John the Baptist (right)

The baroque high altar with twisted vine columns and cranked entablature dates from the beginning of the 18th century. The center of the altar is the figure of St. Leonhard , flanked by Christophorus and John the Baptist . In the essay, the Holy Trinity is shown in relief . The tabernacle marked 1636 comes from an older altar.

The right wall altar from the middle of the 17th century is a simple aedical altar with cartilage. The altar was re-erected in 1995 after the original black and gold setting with white columns had been reconstructed. The altarpiece shows the apostle Andrew and a scene of his martyrdom in the background. Christ and the Samaritan woman at the well is depicted on the base image, and St. Leonhard in the top image.

The left side altar is a work by Benedict Pläß from 1736. The wall altar shows the Whitsun festival with a scenic sculpture in a conical architecture. On the right is the statue of St. Wolfgang , the left figure is missing. The top picture shows the triumphant Christ.

The right side altar was also made by Benedikt Pläß in 1736. As a counterpart to the left side altar, a scenic sculpture of the Annunciation was set up here, which is now in safekeeping.

The pulpit on the right third pillar dates from the second fourth of the 18th century and is ascribed to Johann Pacher . The four evangelists sit at the pulpit , and the cartouches contain relief depictions of the Good Shepherd and Saints Mary Magdalene and Jerome . On the sound cover sit Moses with the tablets of the law and the personified representations of the three Christian virtues . A slug window on the south side of the nave from the middle of the 15th century depicts St. Leonhard.
