The Church of St. Jakob is a Roman Catholic branch church in the municipality of Fernitz-Mellach in Styria . It belongs to the main church Maria Trost in Fernitz-Mellach. Its history goes back to the middle of the 12th century, making it one of the oldest church buildings in Styria. It received its present form in the second half of the 17th century.

history

The first documentary evidence of a church building dates back to 1152. Luidold von Gutenberg was responsible for the construction. In 1698, Joseph Amand von Grünbach had the current church built at this location using older parts of the nave wall . A total renovation took place in 1979.

description

The outer facade of the baroque church is subdivided by plaster pilasters. A Roman inscription stone from the year 100 and several tombstones from the period between 1552 and 1737 were built into the wall. The western wall of the building has supporting pillars at the corners. The facade tower with an onion helmet is placed on top of it. A bell cast by F. Streckfuß in 1700 hangs in the tower. The entire church was originally surrounded by a low cemetery wall. In the south-eastern part there is still a chapel from around 1700.

The three- bay nave is spanned by a double- girdled groin vault sitting on double pilasters . During the restoration work carried out in 1979, two Romanesque windows, one of which was a round window, and a late Gothic cantilever arch were uncovered on the southern wall of the nave . The restorers discovered a small arched shoulder portal built around 1500 in the late Gothic style on the northern wall . The rectangular choir is built on the level of the third bay . On its south side is the two-bay, groin-vaulted sacristy with an oratory above . Short, equally high side arms also branch off from the nave.

The altar panel of the high altar depicts St. Jacob . Like the pulpit , the portrait dates from the last quarter of the 18th century. The southern chapel altar is from around 1700 and the northern one from that around 1720. The figures of the four evangelists on the consoles date from around 1700. In the south arm of the church is the grave slab of Joseph Amand Grünbach von Weissenegg from 1696 , with a building inscription and the year 1698. A vestry cupboard from the end of the 17th century is part of the church furnishings. The organ was created by Mathäus Mauracher in 1894 .
