Filippo Beroaldo the Elder

Filippo Beroaldo the Elder ( Latinized Philippus Beroaldus (Senior) ; * November 7, 1453 in Bologna ; † 1505 ibid) was the uncle of Filippo Beroaldo the Younger and an Italian philologist and neo-Latin poet .

Live and act

Filippo Beroaldo the Elder was a pupil of Francesco del Pozzo from Parma . From 1472 he was a teacher of rhetoric and poetry in Bologna, then in Parma, Paris and Milan. In 1479 he returned to Bologna and was there from 1503 as successor to Alberto Parisi also Cancelliere. His friends included Giovanni Pico della Mirandola and Konrad Mutian .

His most famous works include his annotations on the Virgil commentary by Servius (1482) and his commentary on Asinus aureus , that is to say on the Metamorphoses of Apuleius (1500). He published text editions on Plautus , Sallust , Cicero , Virgil , Suetonius , Aulus Gellius , Pliny the Younger and Lucan, among others .
