History and company profile

In 1966, Josef Fill founded the metalworking company Fill Maschinenbau with two employees in Gurten . A gas station served as a second pillar. Mechanical engineering soon began, for example for ski fishermen in 1970, for various wood processing companies, and from 1979 for the plastics and automotive industries.

In 1976/77 the company manufactured machines and systems for the ski industry, automated processes in PU ski production, and in 1981 developed and produced a CNC milling machine for processing ski components. From 1986 Fill supplied all major ski and snowboard manufacturers worldwide.

The Fill Gesellschaft mbH emerged from the sole proprietorship in 1987 with 137 employees at the time. In 1989, the 100 million schilling turnover limit (7.5 million euros) was exceeded . In 1991 the first CAD stations and a PPS system were installed. In 1994, Fill delivered the first systems for the foundry industry to Mandl & Berger (now Nemak ) in Linz . The foundry technology developed into the division of the company with the highest turnover.

From 1996, Fill supplied systems to international automotive suppliers and automotive manufacturers. According to our own estimates, parts that were manufactured on Fill systems are installed in every third passenger car worldwide.

In 1997 the company was certified according to ISO 9001 .

In 1999, Fill Beteiligungsverwaltungs GmbH was founded .

In 2000, Andreas Fill took over management and shares from his father Josef. In 2001 the conversion from a commercial to an industrial company took place . From 2006 band saws for industrial use, patented wood thin-cutting machines and automatic repair systems for solid wood panels came to the field of activity.

In 2005 Fill had almost 300 employees, 45 of whom were  apprentices . In 2009, together with other companies from the Innviertel, a separate apprenticeship with Matura class was set up at the WIFI  Ried im Innkreis . In 2011, 54 apprentices were trained, which corresponds to a tenth of the workforce. At that time, 50% of the workforce were former in-house apprentices.

In 2010 the company received an order from FACC  (Ried) for an ultrasonic testing system for the aviation industry in Abu Dhabi. In 2012, a laying system for the belt cores of the rotor blades of wind turbines - which previously had to be laid by hand - was presented.

In 2011, the company achieved incoming orders of over € 100 million (€ 85 million in sales) for the first time with an export quota of 90%. It is one of the leading companies in the Innviertel region and one of the 250 companies with the highest turnover in Upper Austria.

In 2012, € 25 million was invested in the Gurten location. The production area was enlarged by 8000 m²

In 2014, Fill founded two wholly owned subsidiaries, one in Shanghai (China) and one in Puebla (Mexico).

In 2016 the new customer and innovation center with an event center of a childcare facility was opened. In 2018, the company put a 5,000 square meter photovoltaic system into operation. Since April 2019, Fill has been building a center for digitization, research and development at the Gurten location.
