The felty chokeberry ( Aronia arbutifolia ), also called red chokeberry , is a species of the rose family (Rosaceae). It is also sometimes called the dwarf rowanberry , although it does not belong to the genus Sorbus . It comes from eastern North America .

Description and ecology

The felted chokeberry is a shrub that reaches heights of 1 to 2, rarely up to 3 meters. Its upright branches and reach a height of up to 2 meters.

With a length of 2 to 8 centimeters, the narrow leaves are oval, elliptical or obovate and delicately serrated. The underside of the leaf is tomentose and the upper side is shiny. Their autumn color is bright red.

The flowering period extends from May to June. 10 to 20 flowers stand together in an umbrella-like inflorescence . The flower stalks and sepals are hairy tomentose. The hermaphrodite flowers are five-fold with a double flower envelope and have a diameter of about 1 centimeter. The five free petals are white, rarely light pink. The anthers are red. The pollination is done by insects.

The light red, berry-like apple fruits have a diameter of up to 7 millimeters. The fruits are edible, but not very tasty. The seeds ripen from October to December.

The felt chokeberry is undemanding and frost hardy .
