Final Cut Pro

Final Cut Pro ( FCP ) is a commercial video editing software from the US company Apple . It is sold exclusively for its own macOS operating system . The software offers the import of different video sources, the digital non-linear video editing, native support for numerous video formats as well as expansion options and interoperability on a professional level.

history

The program was originally developed in 1998 by Randy Ubillos for the US company Macromedia under the name Keygrip as an editing system for the Windows operating system . He is also the head of the first versions of Adobe Premiere . However, he moved from Adobe to Apple, where he developed Final Cut and later Final Cut Studio . FCPX was a request from Steve Jobs with the aim of writing an editing system that would give both beginners and professionals a tool to edit demanding films.

Development and functions

The program version Final Cut Pro offered editing options for many analog and digital video formats, from DV to HD. It was also possible to process other SD video formats. External video players such as Betacam SP or Digital Betacam could be connected with additional video hardware .

From version 4.5 (Final Cut Pro HD) , DVCPRO - HD video material can be recorded, edited and output using the integrated FireWire connection on an appropriately equipped Power Mac without additional special equipment. The previous standard video formats such as B. PAL , NTSC (either 10 or 8 bit uncompressed), DV , DVC 25, DVCPRO 50, Serial Digital Interface join the new H IgH D efinition formats in progressive frame format (25p) or in different field formats (interlaced) to do so. Final Cut Pro 4.5 "HD" natively supports DVCPRO HD media as well as all HDTV standards ( 720p , 1080i , 1080p ).

Version 5 appeared in June 2005 under the name “Final Cut Pro 5”, without the addition “HD”. This had already become the standard for Final Cut Pro in 2005 . Newly emerging video formats have been integrated, e.g. B. Panasonic P2 , HDV or XDCAM from the Japanese company Sony . These formats can be imported directly via Final Cut Pro or imported with extensions such as "XDCAM Transfer" from the provider. An XDCAM can either be controlled via SDI or Firewire 400. It then behaves either like a hard drive or a recorder .

Final Cut Pro is no longer available individually since the National Association of Broadcasters trade fair in 2006, but is part of the Final Cut Studio package. On April 15, 2007, Apple released Final Cut Studio 2 . In addition to Final Cut Pro 6 itself, there are also the DVD authoring program DVD Studio Pro 4.2 , the audio editing program Apple Soundtrack , the title generator LiveType , the coding software Apple Compressor , the motion graphics program Apple Motion 3 , the negative editing software Cinema Tools (for real film cuts of 16 mm, 35 mm or 70 mm), the high-end color correction system Color and Apple's high-end QuickTime Pro 7 included.

Final Cut Pro 6 does not support the Red Digital Cinema Camera Company, or RED Codec for short , but can import it directly as a proxy or as a converted YUV sequence. The processing of (RED) -RAW files, 10- or 12-bit-RGB444 or of resolutions used for cameras like the Red like 4520 × 2160 cannot be handled by FCP. Therefore, FCP is often used as an offline editing system, from which editing is then transferred via EDL to online capable> 4K,> 12-bit RGB systems.

On July 23, 2009, Apple released Final Cut Pro 7 , which is included with Final Cut Studio 3 . Final Cut Studio features in version 3 now rudimentary BD -AV support, but the Blu-ray standard, which requires among other things, BD-Java, BD menu, 3D, DRM and other, from the program in favor of iTunes not is fully supported.

Even if the program was officially discontinued, it was supported until 2017 and up to the operating system Mac OS 10.12. Final Cut Pro 7 is no longer supported with Mac OS 10.13.1 (High Sierra) .

Final Cut Express

In 2003 Apple released Final Cut Express, a cheaper version of Final Cut Pro , with a very similar interface, but without some Pro functions. In January 2005 the Pro tools Soundtrack and LiveType were added to FCE , as well as new HDV functions. In order for this unification was FCE set in June 2011, in favor of Final Cut Pro X .

On June 21, 2011, the manufacturer published Final Cut Pro X at the “FCP User Supermeet” as part of the NAB trade fair in LasVegas. The program has been rewritten to be fully 64-bit compatible and to support OpenCL and Grand Central Dispatch . The iMovie version is a variant for customers that is a full version of FCPX inside, but offers a simplified user interface for laypeople. With the version Final Cut Pro X , the Final Cut Studio suite was discontinued and the further development of several products ended.

The color correction system Color was discontinued without replacement, as was the authoring system DVD Studio Pro . The previously included programs Final Apple Motion and Apple Compressor were now sold individually or could only be used to a very limited extent in the editing program. It was distributed exclusively through the Mac App Store and not on DVD. Unlike before with Final Cut Studio, Apple now focused on the mass market with Final Cut Pro X and reduced the price by 70 percent compared to Final Cut Studio.

Because of the lack of some important functions such as multicam editing, importing edit lists and support for external monitors , there has been criticism from professional circles. In later versions, Apple reacted to this and handed in missing functions, for example multicam editing and support of the REDCODE RAW format and native MXF support. There is now a wide range of third-party manufacturers offering effects and hardware.

After several major films in Asian markets, Glenn Ficarra's “ Focus ” starring Will Smith was the first major Hollywood film (with a budget of 50.1 million US dollars) to be produced exclusively with Final Cut Pro X in 2014 .

Production houses like BBC News and RTS have already switched to FCPX.
