action

After the end of the Civil War, a group of Northerners under the leadership of ex-Lieutenant Winton went to New Mexico to venture a new start; as the squad is traveling through hostile Indian territory, Winton urges a minimum of military discipline. After a short rest, the nearby Fort Grant is headed for, where an unpleasant surprise awaits the "Yankees": The commander of the military post, which has supposedly been converted into a prison camp, Major Hyde, refuses to eat and drink. It was only later that Winton found out that he had dealt with southerners in disguise who await the arrival of a Violet Belmont at Fort Grant to help recover the gold hidden by her banker father during the war in the nearby ghost town of Southernville and thus later to continue the Confederacy's struggle from Mexico. The blonde beauty arrives a little later, but the prospect of the precious metal has long since caused tension; The "gray rock" lieutenant Ed Bannister is constantly rebelling against Hyde's orders and planning his own coup.

Meanwhile, in the forge in Southernville, where the Unions group has gone, the gold that has been worked into horseshoes is discovered by chance. Sergeant Hillstrom also quickly showed a great desire for the treasure which, according to Winton's ideas, should be given to the governor; The team split after a fight between the two is welded together again by smoke signals from the omnipresent Indians - only Hillstrom and the soldier Fred, who is easily influenced by his youth, go their own way, which leads them to the redskins, with whose support Hillstrom primarily get the precious metal want. Winton leads the faithful back to Fort Grant, where he and Hyde want to avert impending dangers despite the previous hostilities. But that is not possible because there is a battle with the savages on the way; besides that, Hyde's men had already left the fort for Southernville.

So the eight remaining "blue coats" also withdraw to the ghost town, where a little later the southerners - who also carry a formerly imprisoned Union major as a hostage - arrive. Hyde arrests Winton, but also shoots the overly aggressive Bannister and a little later, considering the Indian threat, realizes that he can only survive with the help of the Northerners. A cannon to be found locally becomes the most effective means of countering the overwhelming numbers of the redskins encouraged by Hillstrom; but for their use it is necessary to melt the golden horseshoes into balls. In fact, the savages who attack several times succeed in ultimately defeating, and the purified Fred makes a special contribution by killing Hillstrom first and then Chief Numitah; meanwhile, Hyde is killed by an arrow from a wounded Indian. In the end, a happily survived Winton drives to Santa Fe accompanied by Voilets.
