Firgoune (also: Firgoun , Firgoune Goungou ) is a village in the rural municipality of Ayérou in Niger .

The village, run by a traditional chief ( chef traditionnel ), is located on an island in the Niger River . It is located about eight kilometers northwest of the main town of the rural municipality Ayérou, which belongs to the Ayérou department of the same name in the Tillabéri region. In front of the village on the river bank is the hamlet of Firgoune Haoussa.

At the 2012 census, Firgoune had 715 residents who lived in 105 households. At the 2001 census, the population was 895 in 136 households, and at the 1988 census, the population was 1,684 in 262 households.

The French filmmaker Jean Rouch made his first film in Firgoune in 1947: the short documentary Au pays des mages noirs shows the hippo hunt and was released as a supporting film for Roberto Rossellini's Stromboli . Rouch later returned to the village repeatedly. In 1948 he documented the initiation of a young Songhai woman into an obsession dance in Initiation à la danse des possédés and in 1952 another hippo hunt in Bataille sur le grand fleuve .

There is a cattle market used for cross-border trade with Mali and a simple health center without its own laboratory and maternity ward in the village. Rice is grown in Firgoune . In 2002, 2.2% of the nation's rice production was generated here.
