geography

The Fishhook River begins in Park Rapids at the Fish Hook River Dam , which forms the 3 km long Fish Hook River Reservoir, which is used to generate electricity by hydropower and is located at the site of rapids . From Park Rapids, the Fishhook River flows south-southwest through the townships of Todd , Straight River, and Hubbard . The Straight River joins from the west. The Fishhook River flows into the Shell River from the north in Hubbard Township.

The Fish Hook River Reservoir rises from Fish Hook Lake, which collects the tributaries in the northern part of the river's catchment area. Portage and Potato Rivers flow over short distances from Portage Lake and Potato Lake, respectively. The Hay Creek , which comes from the northeast of Becker County and drains an area with several lakes, flows into Potato Lake .

The Fish Hook River runs in an ecoregion with northern lakes and forests, which extend through coniferous plants and hardwood forests to flat and undulating ground moraine plains and sand . Sucker carp dominate the fish species in the river , but eyeglasses and European pike are also present.
