The Fish Lake is a reservoir in Jackson County , Oregon , United States . It is located at an altitude of 1414 m about 55 km northeast of Medford . The formerly natural lake was enlarged by the construction of a 15 m high dam . The Fish Lake Dam dams the northern branch of Little Butte Creek .

geology

Fish Lake lies between two volcanoes : Mount McLoughlin in the north and Brown Mountain in the south. Two thousand years ago, andesite lava flows produced by Brown Mountain surrounded the lake on its southern shore.

history

Fish Lake was originally a natural lake. In 1898, the Fish Lake Water Company was established to facilitate irrigation of the Rogue Valley . The company proposed enlarging Fish Lake and nearby Fourmile Lake to allow more water to be stored. A temporary dam at Fish Lake was built between 1902 and 1908, and a dam was built at Fourmile Lake in 1906. The two lakes were connected by the Cascade Canal in 1915 , so that water from Fourmile Lake, which belongs to the catchment area of the Klamath River , could be channeled over the watershed in the Cascade Range to Fish Lake, thus filling up Little Butte Creek. The temporary dam was replaced by a permanent dam . This dam was modified again in 1922. In 1955 a new flood relief was built. A relief channel was added in 1996. Today the lake is three times as big as it was originally measured.

Hydrology

Fish Lake has an average depth of 5.5 meters and a maximum depth of 9.4 meters. Its surface covers an average of 1,950,000 m² with an average volume of 9,666,000 m³. The catchment area is 52 km². The dam is 15 m high and 293 m long.

fauna

Fish species in the lake include rainbow trout and brown trout . Ospreys are native to the area.

leisure

The Pacific Crest Trail runs along the east bank of the lake. There are three campsites around Fish Lake. Fishing, swimming, and boating are popular recreational activities at the lake that visitors prefer.
