The Sturt's Desert Rose , emblem of the flag of the Northern Territory

The Northern Territory flag was designed by Robert Ingpan and introduced on July 1, 1978 . It differs noticeably from those of the Australian states, as it is not a variant of the British Blue Ensign . The design is reminiscent of the flag of the Australian Capital Territory .

On the ocher-colored flight part of the flag, a typical plant is depicted in white, the Sturt's Desert Rose ( Gossypium sturtianum ); This is, however, with seven (instead botanically correct five) flower petals represented. It was proclaimed as the emblem of the Northern Territory on July 12, 1961 . The seven-pointed black star in the rose is analogous to the Commonwealth Star of the flag of Australia for the six states and the Northern Territory. The ocher symbolizes the rust-red color that dominates the landscape. The Southern Cross on the leech side appears in the form of white stars on a black field.

The ceremony for the introduction of the flag was carried out on the occasion of the authorization for self-government of the Northern Territory on a place near the port in Darwin and was officially recognized with 19 gun salutes from the HMAS Derwent .
