The Flat Coated Retriever is an FCI recognized British dog breed ( FCI Group 8, Section 1, Standard No. 121 ).

Origin and history

The Flat Coated Retriever originated in England in the 19th century by crossing the Wavy Coated Retriever (also called St. John's Dog) with setters and collie-like dogs. Before the First and between the two World Wars, the Flat Coated Retriever was very popular and widespread as an elegant working dog, especially among the English nobility. He was bred for both appearance and work facilities, making a true dual-purpose dog.

After World War II, the Labrador and Golden Retriever enjoyed a tremendous boom, and during World War II and the post-war period, almost all flat-coated kennels disappeared: only a few breeders who continued under the most difficult of conditions, it is thanks to this breed not is extinct.

At the beginning of the eighties the breed briefly became a fashion dog in England , as CH. Shargleam Blackcap was named Best in Show at Crufts in Birmingham.

description

Flat Coated Retriever fetching

The Flat Coated Retriever is a hunting dog with a strong will to find and retrieve . His somewhat exuberant temperament places great demands on the owner's patience and empathy, especially when he is young. With a loving and consistent upbringing, however, he becomes an attentive and self-confident hunting companion.

Due to his willingness to work and his temperament, he is less suitable as a pure family dog. He should have a job and be kept busy. Dummy work is particularly suitable for this , in which one can optimally support the dog according to his disposition. But it is also suitable for rescue dog work , obedience , agility and other dog sports .

Appearance

The head is long and elegantly shaped. The skull is flat and of medium width, with a slight stop at eye level. Nose with well opened nostrils, jaw long and strong. The eyes are medium-sized, dark brown or hazel brown with a very gentle expression. The ears are small and set relatively high, on the sides close to the head. A strong jaw with a complete scissor bite , with the upper row of incisors reaching over the lower row without space and the incisors being perpendicular in the jaw.

The neck must be quite long, sitting symmetrically and diagonally in the shoulder, and merge well into the back. A deep and fairly broad chest, along which the elbows should move freely and evenly, with a clearly defined sternum. The forelegs are straight. The front rib section is rather flat. The body shows a good costal arch, which first gradually bulges, then increases significantly in the middle and decreases in its bulge towards the hindquarters. Muscular, good, but not excessive, angulation of the knees and ankles. The hocks are low, straight and parallel when standing. The paws are round and strong with closed and well knuckled toes. The pads are thick and strong. The tail is short, straight and well set on, friendly, but never carried far above the back line.

The movements of the Flat Coated Retriever must be free and fluid and straight and parallel when viewed from the front as well as from the rear. The coat is dense, fine to medium-thick, and as smooth as possible. The legs and tail are well feathered .

Males are 59 to 61.5 cm shoulder height and weigh 27 to 36 kg. Bitches have a shoulder height of 56.5 to 59 cm and weigh 25 to 32 kg.

The color of the coat is black or liver brown according to the breed standard. Regardless of this, the disposition for a yellow color is inherited recessively and there are occasionally litters with yellow dogs that are not allowed for further breeding. The occurrence of yellow Flat Coated Retrievers is increasingly being ruled out in breeding by DNA analysis before mating. There is an ongoing discussion about recognizing a yellow coat in the breed standard.
