It was mapped by survey work in the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939-1941) and with the help of aerial photographs of the United States Navy between 1961 and 1966. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1968 after Frederick Charles Fletcher (1874-1958) Boston , a sponsor of the United States Antarctic Service Expedition.
