Fletcher Allen

Fletcher Bedford Allen (born July 26, 1905 in La Crosse , Wisconsin , † August 5, 1995 in New York City ) was an American jazz musician ( saxophone , clarinet ) composer and arranger .

Live and act

Allen began his career at Lloyd Scott in New York City. In 1927 he came to Europe for the first time in the band of Leon Abbey . In 1929 he worked in Budapest with Benny Peyton ; In 1936 he went on tour with Abbey to India . At the end of the 1930s he stayed in Paris, where he led his own band, for which he wrote compositions and in which u. a. Marcel Bianchi and Alix Combelle played. He was also a member of the trumpeter Freddy Taylor's orchestra . Recordings were made for Pathé in 1937 . Allen also worked on recordings by Louis Armstrong , Benny Carter / Django Reinhardt (“I'm Coming Virginia”, March 1938). His compositions include Blue Drag, Swingin 'in Paris and Viper's Dream . In late 1938 Allen went on tour to Egypt as a member of the Harlem Rhythmakers , where he stayed for two years. With the outbreak of the Second World War he returned to the United States and worked as a baritone saxophonist in various New York big bands, in the early 1970s with Fred "Taxi" Mitchell.
