The landscape of the national park is characterized by rugged low mountain ridges, deep gorges and sun-burned valley areas. The eucalyptus species River Red Gum ( Eucalyptus camaldulensis ) are typical of the park's flora .

In February 2016, the Aboriginal word Ikara was added to the name Flinderskette . The national park has since been called Ikara-Flinders Range National Park in English . In the language of the Adnyamathanha , a group of four Aboriginal clans in South Australia, Ikara means "meeting point" and is an old name for the landscape of the Wilpena Pound . Wilpena Pound is a mountain basin that forms a natural amphitheater in the center of the national park.
