Florian Guthknecht

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Florian Guthknecht (born September 19, 1969 in Fürstenfeldbruck ) is a German animal filmmaker , director and journalist .

Life

Guthknecht studied German and history in Augsburg and Florence . After completing his studies, he works as a freelance journalist and makes historical documentaries . He traveled to remote regions, especially Asia, and began to document the destruction of nature. In 1998 he documented coral death in the Maldives.

In 2002 he was the first non-Italian journalist who, together with the biologist and cameraman Christian Lott, received permission to film in the Montecristo nature reserve . After primarily historical documentaries were in the foreground of his work until 2003, Guthknecht has since devoted himself primarily to the underwater world. The year before, Guthknecht founded the company Flowmotion-Filmproduktion, which specializes in underwater films. In 2006 he traveled to China with the German cameraman Michael Boxrucker for Bayerischer Rundfunk to be the only western television team to document the extinction of the Chinese river dolphin . The two were the only television team to document a sad turning point in history: the Chinese river dolphin is the first mammal to become extinct not because of hunting, but because of the destruction of its habitat. His award-winning two-part Revolution am Reef , which describes the situation of dying coral reefs , also caused an international stir . In 2015 and 2016 he spent several months on the Caribbean islands for the multi-part Die Karibik for ARD and Arte.

Guthknecht has taught at the University of Augsburg and the Salzburg University of Applied Sciences since 2007 . He worked as a freelance journalist for the Süddeutsche Zeitung and the evening newspaper .

Awards

His first 43-minute animal documentary "Jellyfish - terrible beauties" for ARTE and Bavarian television won the Golden Palm at the 2005 mondial de l'image sous-marine festival in Antibes and was also awarded at European nature film festivals. Guthknecht's documentaries received more than 50 international film awards, including the environmental award at the Science Film Festival in Bangkok for "Sawfish - Neptune's Forgotten Children", "Best Story" at the Festival mondial de l'image sous-marine in Marseille for "Revolution on the Reef", best environmental film at the Jahorina Film Festival and the Prize of the Youth Jury 2017 at the Green Screen Nature Film Festival . For his years of journalistic commitment, he was awarded the Bavarian State Medal for special services to the environment by the Bavarian Environment Minister Ulrike Scharf in 2016.
