Solomon Joseph Solomon
Solomon Joseph Solomon (born September 16, 1860 in London , † July 27, 1927 in Birchington-on-Sea , Kent ) was an English painter.
Life
Solomon came from a long-established family. His sister Lilly was also known as a painter; the writer Moss Hart was his nephew.
Solomon studied at several schools and academies: Heatherley School of Fine Art , Royal Academy of Arts , Munich Art Academy and the École des Beaux-Arts . Through his teachers at the École des Beaux-Arts, first and foremost Alexandre Cabanel - from the spring of 1881 he was regularly invited to the major exhibitions of the Salon de Paris .
In 1896 the Royal Academy of Arts took him on as an "associate" and ten years later they offered him membership, which he also accepted. In 1886 Solomon was instrumental in founding the New English Art Club . In 1919 he was appointed President of the Royal Society of British Artists , and Solomon held this office for several years.

Solomon is one of the Pre-Raphaelites . According to his own admission, he was influenced by Alexandre Cabanel, Frederick Leighton and Lawrence Alma-Tadema .
At the beginning of his artistic career the subjects were historically inspired , but in 1894 at the latest he had made a name for himself as a portraitist with the portrait of the actress Mrs. Patrick Campbell .
