Floyd: There Are Still Heroes (English original title The Feeble Files ) is a point-and-click adventure game from the British developer Adventure Soft . The player steers the alien Floyd through a world full of satirical references to science fiction novels and films. It was released in 1997 for Microsoft Windows , and ports for Mac OS and Commodore Amiga followed a few years later .

action

Floyd is a small clerk at the Department of Galactic Uncertainty for "Corporation," a government-corporate hybrid on his home planet. His job is to create crop circles on underdeveloped planets, including Earth. After completing its task there, shortly after take-off, his spaceship collides with the terrestrial space probe "Voyager 2", triggering a chain reaction of events that ultimately lead to Floyd's imprisonment by the company. In a re-education camp on a prison spaceship, he joins an underground movement whose aim is to overthrow the company's dictatorial government.

In the society in which Floyd lives, the so-called "corporation" is employer, government, police and military all at the same time. The highest management body is the so-called "omnibrain". The company oppresses its citizens or drug them. Rebel behavior is severely punished. Floyd himself aptly describes the company as the Stasi . The system shown is also based on the novels " 1984 " by George Orwell and " Brave New World " by Aldous Huxley .

Game principle and technology

The Feeble Files is a 2.5D point-and-click adventure game . For polygons composite, three-dimensional figures act before also three-dimensional, pre-rendered scenes. The player controls the character through the game world with the mouse. With the mouse buttons he can initiate actions that allow the respective game character to interact with his environment. He can find objects, apply them to the environment or other objects and communicate with NPCs . Dialogues are controlled by a single choice selection of topics given by the game that fit the situation. As the story progresses, more locations will be unlocked. The camera shows what is happening from a partially variable perspective. Initially, she has a permanent position. If the player moves a bit out of the picture, the camera moves along and focuses again. If the player leaves the current room, the camera is transferred to the new room and again assumes a fixed position there.

Production notes

The starting point for the conception and creation of Floyd was that the Adventure Soft authors feared writer's block after the successful titles Simon the Sorcerer and Simon the Sorcerer 2 and therefore took a break from the further development of the fantasy game series. According to Simon Woodruffe, TV series like Doctor Who , Red Dwarf , Star Trek and Blake's 7 were sources of inspiration for his script. The game was created with the AGOS engine developed by Adventure Soft , which was also used for Simon the Sorcerer . Floyd is spoken in the German version by Tobias Meister , Regina Lemnitz takes on the role of Dolores. In 2001, Epic Interactive released a port for Mac OS computers. On modern computers, the game can be played using ScummVM .
